Student Orientation to UMD ELMS-Canvas

This orientation is designed to help students who are new to the ELMS (electronic learning management system) environment.   ELMS is hosted on Instructure's Canvas (hence, the name ELMS-Canvas).  You can use this orientation space as a reference if you have questions about how to perform such activities as communicating with an instructor, submitting an assignment, completing a quiz or survey, or participating in a discussion forum.  You can go through the tutorial at your own pace and in the order that makes sense for your needs.

Once you complete this orientation you will be able to:

  • Interact with the ELMS-Canvas dashboard and a course navigation menu;
  • Customize notification preferences and personal settings;
  • View calendar entries to manage course assignments and events;
  • Communicate with your instructor and classmates and manage your Inbox;
  • Turn in assignments;
  • Complete a quiz or survey;
  • Post to a discussion board;
  • Review your grades and instructor feedback.

Upon successful completion of this orientation, you have the option of taking a quiz to demonstrate your proficiency.   NOTE: In order to access the self-assessments in this publicly available resource you must NOT be logged into ELMS.  If you are logged in at this time, please Logout and return to go.umd.edu/elmsstudent Links to an external site. in a new browser window.
