  • Identify skills in demand by your industry of interest
  • Connect job titles to your area of study
  • Gain ideas for your LinkedIn profile

You must have a LinkedIn account BEFORE starting this assignment. Use the resources below to get started:

  • Starting a profile (Links to an external site.) (must complete the “education section” to be able to access the Alumni tool)
  • Build your personal brand (Links to an external site.)
  • Consider your security settings: Account Security and Privacy - LinkedIn Security & Privacy Guide 2022
  • Note: Consider adding connections. The more connections you have, the better access you will have to review the profiles of alumni you find interesting. Groups are another powerful way to find and connect with alumni of interest. For example, you may join the 'University of Maryland, College Park Alumni Association (Official)' group. Look for and consider joining other groups connected to your college and/or major at UMD too.

1. View this video to learn how to use the LinkedIn Alumni Sorting Tool.

2. You can click on any of the colored bars in the columns to see UMD alumni filtered for that item. For example, if you want to see UMD alumni in the Washington, DC Area, you would click bar below "Washington, DC Metro Area" on the first page in the first column. You will see the number change because you have filtered it down. If you want to search by an item but don’t see it listed in the column (example: you want to search by alumni that work for Booz Allen Hamilton), click the "+ Add" button and type in your selection.

For the location and employer columns, notes have been added letting you know you can click the Add button to type in a new City or Employer name.

For the major filter column, a note has been added that the list of majors on LinkedIn does not perfectly match the majors at UMD, so you may need to search by multiple similar major names. Click the Add button to type in additional major names.

3. Use this tool to answer the questions in the quiz.
