A lot of people are in careers and or jobs they didn't know existed as a college student. We often know the careers we are exposed to or our relatives have, but certainly not every job available. Attending events with employers and/or alumni can increase your knowledge of possible careers and opportunities.
Instructions
Attend an event hosted by the University Career Center & The President's Promise. This event could be a career fair, panel, career shuttle, networking night, or workshop led by a staff member of the Center. To find out what events are being held this semester and when, visit the Center's website at careers.umd.edu Links to an external site. and click on "Events Calendar" at the top of the page. You can click through each month to see what events are happening. Check back often as more events may be added as the semester continues. Please do not wait until the end of the semester to find an event, more events of interest will be available at the beginning of the semester.
Evaluation
In order to receive full points you must attend an event and submit a one page reflection paper on the event you attended. Please consider including the following:
- Why did you choose to attend this event?
- What was the format of the event?
- If employers/alumni were present which organizations did they represent? (if you attended an event with more then 10 employers, just list the ones you spoke to)
- What did you expect before going into this event?
- What did you learn from this event?
- Did this event teach you something about your career interests?
- What actions do you plan to take after this event?
- What types of career events would you want to attend in the future?
