Developing Professional Communication Skills

"You have seven seconds to make a good first impression!" Whether you’re applying to jobs or already in an internship position, acting appropriately and with good business etiquette will help you go further in the professional world.

This assignment includes a collection of videos that will provide tips to help you navigate communication situations that may make you feel awkward or nervous, such as leaving a voicemail or sending a text to a professional contact. You will be using LinkedIn Learning Videos, which is an online resource that provides 100's of instructional videos to help students gain skills. 

Watch the videos listed under "Business Etiquette: Phone, Email, and Text" on LinkedIn Learning. Follow the instructions below to access the videos. 

Log into LinkedIn Learning

• • Visit linkedin.com/learning/ : You should be directed to UMD's CAS log-in page. Enter the same email address and password you use to access your UMD email. 
  • You will be given the option to connect with your LinkedIn profile. If you do not have a LinkedIn account or do not wish to connect it, simply follow the prompts to "continue without LinkedIn."  The first time you connect, there may be a short series of questions from LinkedIn Learning about your specific interests. Follow the prompts and you should then be allowed into LinkedIn Learning. 

Once you are logged in to LinkedIn Learning, type in the title, “Business Etiquette: Phone, Email, and Text” in the search box. Click on the course and watch or read the transcript for all of the sections listed below. The video is 54 minutes long.

• Using Proper Etiquette in Text Messages
• Using Proper Etiquette with Written Communication
• Using Proper Etiquette on the Phone
