Who is eligible for counseling services and what are the fees?

  • Currently registered UMD students are eligible for services.  Please note that State of Maryland licensing laws for psychologists require that clinical telehealth services (group therapy, clinical workshops, or brief individual therapy either by video or phone) may be provided only to students who reside in Maryland.  Conducting teletherapy across state lines is prohibited by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists.  However, students who reside outside of Maryland are eligible for non-clinical consultation by phone with a Counseling Center psychologist and other services such as wellness workshops and referral assistance.

  • While there is no limit to the number of group sessions an eligible student may attend, individual or couples counseling sessions are limited.  The average number of individual sessions per client at the Counseling Center is about six.  Former clients who are appropriate for subsequent individual counseling at the Counseling Center are eligible one year from the date of their last counseling session.  Assistance with referral to off-campus providers is available to all UMD students.

  • Counseling Service services are free to registered UMD students.

What services does the Counseling Center offer?

  • As the primary campus provider of psychological and consultation services, the Counseling Service offers free and confidential counseling sessions to registered UMD undergraduate and graduate students.
  • The focus of the initial appointment referred to as an intake appointment Links to an external site., is to determine the nature and impact of the presenting concerns and to identify options for addressing these issues. If additional treatment is indicated, the intake counselor will recommend the most effective method of treatment, which may include group counseling, career exploration, workshops, brief individual or couples counseling, or referral to an off-campus mental health provider. In some cases, the intake appointment is sufficient for identifying ways to address the problems.
