Hey! My name is Venia Imel and I’m Black, Muslim, and criminal justice major from Baltimore, Maryland. I’m currently a senior on my way to becoming a lawyer (in what kind of law, I don’t know yet!) so I can put my systematic organizational skills, passionate public speaking, desire to advocate, organize, and problem solve to work in service of equitable causes. A disruptor and builder, I am able to plan accordingly and put visions from paper into reality. During my undergraduate experience here at UMD I have spent most of my time programming events and doing community service with the NAACP, U.E.X.C.E.L, and other Black student run organizations. I was a part of the Maryland Mock trial team, a BSOS peer advisor, and spent a lot of time organizing cultural advocacy related events. I’m grateful to have been educated on race, gender, and other socioeconomic issues during my classes time here so I now work to understand how to make equitable solutions a reality for the world. I absolutely love video games, my cat, and fashion amongst a myriad of other geeky things like manga, comic conventions, anime, and musicals. I dream of learning how to sew my own clothes, paint beautiful watercolor landscapes, travel, and create art about what I have seen, fantasies I've dreamed in my head, and where I one day hope to end up.
