Instructions
The reading assignment here is: Chapters 3.3.3, 3.6, 3.7.1, 3.7.2.
We have posted two Jupyter Notebooks that cover this material interactively.
- Different Types of Joins: (Links to an external site.) Covers different types of joins (going beyond what is part of the reading assignment).
- SQL and NULLs (Links to an external site.): Shows how NULLs are handled by different SQL queries.
As before: if you open these in Jupyter (on your VM), then you can try out different queries and/or see how the relational algebra operations behave on different inputs. These are also posted to Instabase.
Reading homeworks are intended to ensure that you have read the assigned material. It is perfectly fine if you are not able to answer all the questions correctly. However I expect you should typically get at least 1/2 of the questions right. You will get full credit as long as you have put in the effort to complete it, and a large fraction of the answers are correct (ignore the score that ELMS gives).
Also note that: reading homeworks are mandatory; you can miss at most 2, but missing more than that will lead to lower overall grade points for the reading homeworks.
