Peer Review Overview

I.  PEER REVIEW IN ENGL393
For each major assignment in ENGL393, you will have the opportunity

  1. to peer review at least one of your classmate's drafts and
  2. to have your draft peer reviewed by at least one of your classmates.

Peer review will happen both in class and online.

II. REQUIREMENTS

For each peer review exercise, you will be given a page of questions that you will answer at the end of your partner's document. In addition to providing comments within the text itself, answering these questions at the end of the document will give you the opportunity to provide your partner with more in-depth constructive criticism.

As you will see in the Gradebook and under course Policies and Procedures, peer review will be accounted for in the Draft Submission/Online component of your final grade.

IV. EFFECTIVE PEER REVIEW
Many of you have participated in peer review at some point in your academic careers. If you have, you've probably seen how peer review can go well and how it can go not-so-well.

One important thing to keep in mind is that peer review does not mean proofreading. Proofreading is the process of correcting grammatical, spelling, and typographical errors within a document. Proofreading is what we do at the very end of the drafting process, once we have the content in order. Proofreading an assignment that has fundamental issues relating to content and argument is wasted time.

Instead, Peer Review is the process by which one is able to impart perspective by providing examples and posing questions that challenge arguments and promote the growth of ideas. Often, the process of peer reviewing someone else's paper will give you as much, if not more, insight into your approach to your own document.
